Calls to stop suspected sex offenders watching junior sport
07/12/2020
A Radio News Hub Investigation has found a loophole in the law which allows people being investigated for child sexual offences to attend junior sports events.
We’ve seen evidence of a veteran football coach in Lancashire who was still attending junior matches despite being charged with sharing sexual communications with someone he thought was a 12-year-old boy.
In this case police didn’t think the man in his 70’s was a risk despite him being caught during a police sting.
What is even more concerning is that a number of organisations including the football club knew he was being investigated by police.
Campaigners are now calling for a change in the law that bans anyone arrested on suspicion of child sex offences to be automatically banned from entering areas where children are.
We’ve been hearing from David Lean who was a victim of the peadophile football coach Barry Bennell.
