Over 15 million minks to be culled in Denmark
Minks in Denmark were infected with the virus that causes Covid-19 following exposure from infected humans, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said.
All non-British national or resident travellers who have been in or transited through Denmark in the last 14 days will be denied entry into the UK due to widespread outbreaks of coronavirus in the country’s mink farms.
The WHO said SARS-CoV-2 strains infecting minks, which are subsequently transmitted to humans, may have acquired “unique combinations of mutations”.
Advanced laboratory studies are required in order to fully understand the impact of specific mutations.
Six countries – Denmark, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Italy and the US – have reported SARS-CoV-2 in farmed minks to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).
The Danish government has ordered the cull of all 15 million minks bred in the country’s 1,139 mink farms.
