The Oscar for best supporting actress has been won by Emilia Perez star Zoe Saldana, for playing a lawyer who helps a Mexican drug lord change gender in the Spanish language musical.
On stage, Saldana was emotional as she shouted out “mummy”, saying her “whole family is here”, and added that “everything brave, outrageous and good in my life was because of you”.
Speaking to the French director Jacques Audiard, she also said “thank you being so curious about these women to tell these stories”, and also said the prize was for the cast of Emilia Perez.
“My grandmother came to this country in 1961, I am a proud child of immigrant parents,” she also said.
Saldana added she was the first actress of Dominican heritage to win the prize, and said her grandmother would be “proud” of her singing and acting in Spanish.
