Mum: “there’s hundreds and thousands of other mothers like me out there trying to keep the magic of these events alive … why bother?”

An eight-year-old boy who just wanted people in his area to have a happy Halloween has been left upset after heartless thieves stole his pumpkin.

As we reported on Saturday, Jason Mitchell and his mum Hannah dreamt up a COVID friendly way of ensuring trick-or-treaters got a treat during an otherwise subdued Halloween this year.   They crafted a pumpkin with lollypops stuck all around it.  They left the pumpkin outside so local children could help themselves with social distancing not being a problem.

Before heading off to a Halloween event Jason put the pumpkin in place outside the family’s Hardwick house.   When they returned home later on someone had stolen it.

Jason was very unhappy when he saw the pumpkin had gone.   He told Banbury FM: “I’m upset because it was hard to carve the pumpkin and push the lollies into it.”

Mum Hannah can’t understand why someone wanted to spoil the fun for others.   She said: “I just think it’s a shame.   There were more than enough lollypops for them to take one for themselves, even more than one. But instead they took the whole pumpkin.

“It’s a shame because there’s hundreds and thousands of other mothers like me out there trying to keep the magic of these events alive, given the tough restrictions we’re under and now we just sort of think ‘why bother’?

“I get that kids will be kids, it wasn’t all that long ago that I was one myself, but you’d just think that given the circumstances everyone, including older children, would be a little more respectful in these hard times.”

The family have no idea who took the pumpkin as no one was spotted in the area.   However they do know at least some other children got to enjoy a lollypop before the theft.

Hannah said: “Jason had some sweets popped through the letterbox.   We’ve no idea who by, but we’re hopeful that it means a couple of kids got to pick a treat out of our pumpkin before he was taken.”
