Puritans leave the competition after losing to Canvey Island
A supporter free Banbury Plant Hire Stadium turned out not to be the setting for footballing history in town on Saturday. In Banbury United’s FA Cup first round match against Canvey Island the Puritans left the competition after losing 1-2.
Midway through the first half Hubble had scored for Canvey midway through first half giving them the lead. Despite a number of goal mouth scrambles Banbury failed to equalise.
In the second half Banbury came out determined and Ricky Johnson scored for the Puritans on the 67th minute. However, Canvey Island weren’t behind for long and managed to maintain their lead through to the final whistle after 4 minutes of extra time.
The final score Banbury United 1 Canvey Island 2.
After the game Banbury’s Manager Andy Whing tweeted: “Sorry to the Banbury United FC supporters. Unfortunately today wasn’t our day. I promise you this is just the start!”
Support for Banbury United had been strong. After the match many were keen to show how proud they were of their team. Councillor Sean Woodcock said: “They were brilliant. Cheered roof off at equaliser. Well done lads.”
