Local COVID-19 cases leap in some areas
12/11/2020

Positive COVID-19 test results are up again, but some areas remain stable whilst others jump
The latest COVID-19 figures show another increase in cases in the Banbury FM area. The numbers reveal a jump to 228 new positive tests last week (up to November 6th). During the previous week the same area recorded 167 new cases.
However, not every part of our area is equally affected. The largest surge in new cases came in Middleton Cheney & Chipping Warden, leaping from 21 cases two weeks ago to 57 last week. Brackley jumped from 18 new COVID-19 cases two weeks ago to 41 last week.
Around the wards of Banbury new cases remain at similar levels to previous weeks, with Grimsbury remaining the worst affected area with 24 new cases – down from 31 the previous week.
You can see the latest figures for all parts of the Banbury FM area on our COVID-19 Dashboard.
The local increase comes at the end of the first week of the latest period of lockdown and as the number of people who have died with coronavirus in the UK passed 50,000.
Oxfordshire County Council is urging people to abide by the rules and to remain positive saying that the impact of lockdown will take time to translate into data.
Ansaf Azhar, Oxfordshire County Council’s Director for Public Health, said: “These figures don’t mean lockdown isn’t working – it’s just that it is far too early for any impact to have been seen in the statistics just yet. We were expecting to see cases continue to rise given that only a short period has elapsed since the start of lockdown. However, the further rise in cases in Oxfordshire does emphasise the need for people to abide by the lockdown rules in a collective effort to drive down cases.
“Apart from rising cases, there is a noticeable increase in transmission through the various age groups – not just in the 18 – 24 year old age group, which was the case earlier in the autumn.
“I make no apology for repeating myself in an effort to get the message across – this virus thrives on people being in close contact with each other. We saw earlier this year the impact social distancing can have in managing COVID-19. That’s why the government has reintroduced lockdown measures across the country.
“The rules are only as good as people abiding by them. I would like to thank people for sticking to the rules and strongly appeal to them to continue to do so. Stay at home, wash your hands regularly, don’t mix households, wear a face-covering and use the capacity we have in place for testing in Oxfordshire. If we do all of these things then we have good reason to hope that we will bring COVID-19 figures down in the same way that we did in the spring.
“There’s been a lot in the news about a vaccine in recent days. That’s a welcome development but for the immediate future it doesn’t change the way we should behave in any way.”

I had to go into Banbury on Saturday to collect a late prescription and was horrified to see so many people acting as if it was a normal Saturday morning.
Very few masks worn, large groups of teenagers messing around and sitting on the seats and walls outside M&S like any normal day. Other people had clearly been Christmas shopping with bulging carrier bags, and were sitting with other folk on the seats outside Debenhams chatting together. No wonder we are not winning against this virus.
I have seen the guidelines being observed better when we weren’t in lockdown!
