Latest figures show infection rates fall for a fifth week but are still at levels where officials were requesting tougher restrictions

The number of new COVID-19 infections in the Banbury FM area fell again last week.   That is the fifth week of falls, although there are still COVID hotspots with increases in two areas of town.

Last week there were 113 new cases in our area where people had received a positive test result for the virus.   In the previous seven days this figure stood at 124 and 141 for the week ending 20th November.

Banbury FM’s analysis of the official government data covers Banbury and the surrounding villages to the north of the Cherwell District.   It also includes neighbouring areas in South Northamptonshire: Brackley, Kings Sutton, Greatworth, Evenley, Middleton Cheney and Chipping Warden.

Across our area the only places recording increases in the number of virus infections was the Easington and Grimsbury areas of Banbury.   Easington recorded 27 new cases last week, up from 6 the previous week.   Grimsbury increased to 27 from 20 the previous week.

New COVID weekly case numbers are now at the lowest level since mid-October and the falls follow the most recent lockdown period.   However they remain at levels which previously saw health and council officials back then requesting our area be increased to tier 2 high alert level.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to review England’s lockdown tier system and announce changes next week.   It is likely figures for the current week, and whether infection rates continue to fall post lockdown, will play an important part in deciding whether our area remains in tier 2.   It is anticipated the tiers will be reviewed next Wednesday (December 16).
