Banbury Sea Cadets are hoping someone will donate scaffolding poles to help protect their boats

Banbury Sea Cadets are on the lookout for some scaffolding poles so they can help protect their boats from the elements.   Scaffolding poles would provide secure support to store their watercraft safely, helping avoid damage from wind and rain.

The Unit has been unable to meet in person for much of the last twelve months, since the first lockdown period began.   They have continued to parade virtually using Zoom.

Normally water activities would take place at Grimsbury reservoir.   Some of the boats are sitting on the ground and the kayaks are stored on an old trailer.   In the absence of regular visits and now, with the winter weather making its mark, the Sea Cadets are worried that if they don’t do something damage could occur.

Probationary Petty Officer Aaron Austin said: “We’re looking for the scaffolding to offer more support to the kayaks and potentially to level out our rowing boats.

“The platform that our kayaks are on is not enough to support them.   Having the scaffolding in place would give them that extra bit of support, especially when we’re not there during the winter months or periods like this”.

The Sea Cadets meet twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays.   In normal times they use the reservoir in the warmer months and Banbury School at other times.

The Unit has just under 30 cadets split into juniors aged 9-12 and seniors 12-18.   There are currently some spaces available for more juniors to join.

Anyone able to donate some scaffolding poles is asked to contact the Unit via their Facebook page (Banbury Sea Cadets) or email [email protected].
