Activists place stickers on ATMs accusing banks of funding the climate crisis
Cash machines in the centre of Banbury have been targeted by members of Extinction Rebellion.
Stickers have appeared on the ATMs at the branches of Barclays Bank in Bridge Street and HSBC in the Market Place. The stickers accuse the banks of funding the climate crisis.
In a tweet Extinction Rebellion Banbury said: “Stickers appearing across Banbury, Oxfordshire to emphasise that High Street Banks are destroying the planet by continuing to fund fossil fuel extraction.
“Have you switched your bank yet? Why not join us and make a difference.”
A spokesperson for Barclays told Banbury FM: “We want to take a leading role in tackling climate change as we recognise that it is one of the greatest challenges facing the world today.
“Our ambition is to become a net zero bank by 2050, and we’ve made a firm commitment to align our entire financing portfolio to the goals of the Paris Agreement. That means our own operations, and the financing we do for our clients, in every sector, will support the transition towards a low-carbon economy.”
