International Women’s Day #ChoosetoChallenge

Banbury’s event will return next year after the pandemic forced the cancellation of today’s event
Today is International Women’s Day.
Last year the day was marked with an event at The Mill Arts Centre, organised by International Women’s Day Banbury. The inaugural Cherwell celebration brought the globally recognised event to our town with the aim of empowering local women and those that support them.
Organisers announced in January that they wouldn’t be able to organise an in-person event this year due to the pandemic. They said: “This is a decision that has not been easy to take, but one we feel is right for our curation team, the safety of our local community and in support of the amazing, unrelenting key workers – so many of them women – that put their lives on the line every day.”
The global theme of International Women’s Day 2021 is #ChoosetoChallenge. We are reminded that we are all responsible for our own thoughts and actions. People are being encouraged to challenge and call out gender bias and inequity, to seek out and celebrate women’s achievements, and to help create an inclusive world.
International Women’s Day Banbury are hoping by next year they will be able to organise an event to mark the occasion. They said: “Much like Glastonbury, we hope this will simply be a ‘fallow year’ and we will be back better than ever in 2022. Planning will start in late summer, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you would like to be involved.”
