Sunday is Census day

Local support is available for people who need help completing the return

Sunday is Census Day.   The census is a national survey that takes place once every ten years.

People are being asked to head online using a code they will have received in the post to fill in the details for their household.   There is the option to complete a paper census return for those who would prefer.

Census data is used to help shape the country for the future.   Local authorities use the statistical data to plan how many education places are needed.   Recently census information has been used in the vaccine rollout to ensure doses are distributed in the right numbers around the country.

Information gathered during the census includes personal information such as people’s national identity, state of health, where they work and how they get there.   When measured against previous census results, trends can be seen for changing habits and lifestyles.

A census of all the people and households in England and Wales has been carried out every decade since 1801, apart from in 1941.

Ross Tackley, an Engagement Manager for the census team, said: “The information you give in the census is completely anonymous.   Your personal data is protected by law for at least 100 years and no other government organisation or local authority is going to be able to see that information.

“We are encouraging as many people to go online to complete the form.   Everybody should have a code sent to them in the post.   If anybody doesn’t have that code, or they’ve lost it, they can go to census.gov.uk and request it.   If you would like to fill it in on paper you can also do that as well.”

Whilst Sunday is the target “snapshot” date for the census, the detail can be filled in now or when time allows in the weeks that follow.

Two local census support centres have been set up for those who would like help or advice.   One can be found at Banbury Madni Mosque on Merton Street (01295 276662); the other is at Banbury Citizen’s Advice (01295 238300).
