Peaceful Protest for Palestine in Banbury this Sunday
18/05/2021

“Even if we’re able to educate just one person so they find out a bit more about Palestine and what’s happening there, that would be great”
The plight of the Palestinian people in the middle east will be the focus of a peaceful protest in Banbury being planned for this Sunday (23rd May). The event has been organised to raise awareness and educate people to the current situation.
The ongoing conflict between Israel and Gaza has brought people to the streets of this country to protest during the last few weeks.
Organiser Maryam Ahmed from Grimsbury is planning the event. She said: “It’s a peaceful protest – I want to emphasize that.”
Having helped organise the marches in Oxford, which were attended by the former Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn, Miss Ahmed says people have been asking her about a similar event here.
She says the main aims of the protest and education and awareness: “Even if we’re able to educate just one person so they find out a bit more about Palestine and what’s happening there, that would be great.
“People are being killed – children, women. We just want freedom for Palestinians. We want peace.”
Aware that some people may be concerned about a gathering of people during the pandemic, Miss Ahmed is keep to stress that people are being urged to act safely. She said: “I’m trying to keep COVID measures in place with social distancing and everyone will be wearing masks. I’ll have people with hand sanitizer available, so hopefully it won’t be a problem.
The event on Sunday will run from 2-4pm outside Banbury Town Hall. Speakers to address the protest are being organised and people are asked to bring along posters and flags.
