Volunteers and those working within the Oxford University Hospitals Trust thanked

On the NHS’ 73rd birthday, Oxford University Hospitals Trust has publicly thanked and recognised the difference the many volunteers make for staff and patients in their hospitals, including the Horton General.

After Volunteers’ Week in June a socially distanced outside gathering took place at the Horton to thank the volunteers for their commitment to the Trust.

Those giving their time have been vital during the COVID-19 pandemic with volunteers helping distribute PPE, staff help desks, and raise funds.

Professor Sir Jonathan Montgomery, OUH Chair said: “Our fabulous volunteers are such an asset for the Trust and I would like to send a personal thank you to each and every one of them for the support they provide to us.”

Meanwhile, the Trusts’ Chief Nursing Officer Sam Foster has attended a special service at St Paul’s Cathedral in London as part of the 73rd birthday celebrations.   The NHS National Service of Thanksgiving recognised the dedication and commitment of all those who have played their part in combating COVID-19 across the NHS, care sector, and beyond.

Sam, who has worked on the frontline to support staff during the pandemic, administered the first Oxford/AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccination in the world (outside a clinical trial) in January.

She said: “I am very honoured to have been invited to attend this special service of thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral to recognise the work of NHS staff during the COVID-19 pandemic on the occasion of the NHS Birthday. I will be proud to represent my colleagues, both clinical and non-clinical.

“I would like to take this opportunity to say a special thank you to, not only my colleagues at OUH and the University of Oxford who have gone the extra mile to care for our patients and for each other during the COVID-19 pandemic, but also everyone else who has pulled together and supported us.

“This includes a ‘thank you’ to all the volunteers, including our Oxford Hospitals Charity, and members of the Oxfordshire community for the remarkable support which we in the NHS have received since the start of the pandemic, and for which we are incredibly grateful.”
