Aynho villagers’ celebration moved to July

Villagers will still celebrate the lifting of lockdown rules, but four weeks later than originally planned
Aynho’s end of lockdown party will happen, but four weeks later than planned. The village’s Parish Council had arranged a get together for all villagers today so they could meet and celebrate the lifting of restrictions.
Tagged as ‘Freedom Day’, today was originally planned as the day when all lockdown rules were set to be removed. That changed after Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed that concerns about the highly transmissible Delta COVID variant meant the final step out of lockdown needed to be delayed by four weeks, to July 19.
In Aynho villagers had been looking forward to meeting by the pavilion in their recreation ground. A brick-built barbecue had been put in place on a newly laid concrete base.
As well as food, the afternoon and evening were due to be spent enjoying live music and sporting events.
The celebration was seen as an opportunity to introduce newcomers to life in Aynho after months of being unable to engage with the community. In the village newsletter the organisers said: “If you run a club or society in the village and would like to promote it at the party, please do get in touch. We have so many new Aynho-ers who would love to know what the village can offer and this could be a great opportunity to let them know about you.”
The extension to lockdown until July 19 has left the organisers with no option other than to postpone today’s arrangements, although they do still plan to go ahead on the new ‘freedom day’.
In the village newsletter they said: “It’s disappointing, but we have no choice as a Parish Council.
“However, the good news is that we are not abandoning the village party and we look forward to seeing everyone up on the field and at the pavilion on Monday 19th July.
“One last push and then hopefully freedom will be ours again!”
