Members of Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet used public transport, bikes and walking as ways of getting to County Hall as part of Car Free Day.

Avoiding using cars by cycling, walking or using public transport is the aim of Car Free Day, which aims to take the heat off the planet for one day by encouraging people to be less dependent on their vehicles by trying alternatives.

Councillor Duncan Enright, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Travel and Development Strategy, said: “Residents and businesses have been pushing at an open door when asking the new Fair Deal Alliance County Cabinet for urgent action to address traffic congestion, health issues caused by pollution, the climate emergency and taking the opportunity to promote healthy ways to travel.”

Having arrived at County Hall in Oxford, cabinet members posed for photograph outside the building before attending a meeting at 8.30am.

Councillor Enright added: “Fewer car journeys mean cleaner, safer travel across the county, as well as reducing our impact on the environment, and is emblematic of our many policies and initiatives, now under way, to move to sustainable travel in Oxfordshire.”

Clearly they don’t live in a village with no bus service and no shop. It’s fine if you can walk out your front door and catch a bus or if you can stay in for a day. For the real world, though, a day without a car is impossible.
All this is a nonsense anyway. The UK produces just 1.1% of the world’s pollution. If we shut down completely for ever it wouldn’t make any difference to the planet. The Extinction Rebellion rabble should go and block roads in China or India etc.
This country’s green proposals will cost everyone a fortune but do nothing to cut world pollution.
