Banbury Town Centre is ready with the sun shining on the finish line in South Bar

The first stage of the AJ Bell Women’s Tour is heading into North Oxfordshire.

The pro-cyclists set off from Sheep Street in Bicester at 11.15 this morning.   The route has taken them to the south of the county but now they are heading up the A4260 and due to arrive in Deddington between 1pm and 1.30pm.

From here they ride out through Hempton and up Iron Down Hill to the A361.

The route then takes in South Newington, Milcombe, Hook Horton and Sibford Ferris, before heading towards Banbury through Swalcliffe and Tadmarton to Broughton.

The race is due in Banbury via the Broughton Road, passing the finish line on South Bar before looping back out to Bloxham and around the Hook Norton and Sibford Ferris loop again.

It is expected that the final sprint back into Banbury to cross the finish line on South Bar will be at around 3pm.

Hundreds of people are expected to line the route with Banbury firmly on show as the eyes of the world watch the cyclists cross the finish line on South Bar after passing Banbury Cross.

The Experience Banbury Team from Banbury BID are amongst a variety of stalls and traders lining the home straight on South Bar.   Banbury BID Manager Yolanda Fletcher told Banbury FM: “There’s lots of hospitality places in the town centre that are offering discounts for lunches and having a coffee in the sun.

“For Banbury to receive such an amazing event – thousands of people on a spectator level, and the riders – is brilliant.   For marketing the town it is so sunny and beautiful today, so come down to Banbury and see the winner.

“It ends in Banbury so we are delighted.”
