Wykham Park Academy students celebrate A level results

Sixth formers at Wykham Park Academy in Banbury have been celebrating their A level results, which they received this morning.
Having defied the disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, around 37% secured grades A*-B. 99% achieved grades A*-E, which is an improvement on the 95% achieving these grades in 2019.
Today’s results follow exams earlier this year – the first physical exams since 2019. The students had endured two prolonged periods of school closures and the cancellation of their GCSEs.
Carly Berry, Head of Sixth Form at Wykham Park which has been graded ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted, said the results are a reflection of the hard work of the students and the measures put in place by the school to help them succeed.
She said: “I think if we reflect on this year’s cohort, they had a disruptive Year 11 and didn’t sit any exams as their GCSE grades were teacher-assessed. When they came back in Year 12 they still endured disruption following a second lockdown and Year 13 is the only year that they haven’t been interrupted and this is the first set of exams they have had to sit.
“I’m incredibly proud of our sixth formers. They have performed brilliantly and the results are testament to their hard work and resilience.
“I would also like to thank our teaching staff for their commitment in rolling out the measures we introduced to support our students and boost their wellbeing.”
18-year-old twins Saarika and Sanjana Solomon are over the moon with their results.
Saarika sat Biology, Psychology and Sociology A-levels. She achieved 3 B grades and will study Sociology at Bristol University.
Her sister Sanjana also took A-levels achieving an A for Biology, A in Psychology and a B grade for Geography. She also secured an A for EPQ. She will study bological Sciences at Cardiff University.
Saarika said: “The last two years have been stressful but the school has been very supportive. We have had catch up sessions and help with revision and a lot of support with our wellbeing. Our teachers were always there to support us and help with whatever we needed.
“Online learning is not the same as being in a classroom and we covered a lot when we returned to make sure we were prepared for our exams.
“I’m so pleased to have achieved my goal of going to Bristol and I can’t wait to start following my gap year.”
Sanjana said: “I’m happy I got to sit exams this time around as for our GCSEs we had teacher-assessed grades. Preparing for the exams was stressful but I’m happy that I’ve been able to prove that I’m capable of doing the exams.
“The teachers helped us a lot and gave us a lot of one-to-one support and organised extra sessions for subjects if we wanted them. They were great and Saarika and I are grateful for the support of our teachers.
“Saarika and I will both be taking a gap year.”
