MP visits Wykham Park Academy and Horton Treatment Centre

Victoria Prentis impressed by year 7s questioning and working relationship between Horton Treatment Centre and main hospital
Visits to The Horton Treatment Centre and to meet year 7 pupils at the Wykham Park Academy were part of the schedule for North Oxfordshire’s MP Victoria Prentis on Friday.
At the Horton Treatment Centre Mrs Prentis took a tour of the facilities and met Hospital Director Paul Byrne to discuss the impact of coronavirus on local NHS services. At the height of the pandemic the Horton Treatment Centre became a trauma unit to ease pressure on other services at the Horton. Today outpatient services have resumed with a focus on day surgery and the resumption of knee and hip operations.
Mrs Prentis said, “The Horton Hospital and The Centre have a really good working relationship, which was very clear during the height of the coronavirus pandemic and which I know they are keen to build on going forward. It was great to hear that patients who need knee or hip operations can be in and out of the centre within a day, and that the physiotherapy centre has brilliantly adapted to virtual pre-op classes and issuing post-op equipment in advance”.
At the Wykham Park Academy Mrs Prentis met year seven pupils who’s lessons include Democracy Sessions. Students quizzed the MP on her life as their local Member of Parliament and focused on issues such as her work as a DEFRA minister, how she became an MP and who inspired her to go into politics. Youngsters were also keen to hear if she had met the Prime Minister!
Other issues the students were keen to discuss included plastic pollution and coronavirus laws.
Teaching staff discussed with Mrs Prentis how the coronavirus pandemic has forced them to adapt and overcome the challenges of online learning, with Google Classroom providing a way to facilitate that.
Mrs Prentis said, “I really enjoy visiting local schools on constituency days, especially when the students are so politically engaged and enthusiastic.
“I was very impressed by the nature of their questions; they certainly did not hold back! I wish them all the luck for the rest of their school year”.
