Handbag stolen from woman’s lap as she pulls up on her own drive
31/07/2022
The offenders had followed the elderly victim home from a Banbury bank
An elderly woman had her handbag snatched from her lap as drove onto her driveway in Middleton Cheney. The woman had just withdrawn cash from a bank in Banbury and the thieves had followed her home.
The theft took place in broad daylight on Thursday July 21.
The lady was unaware that she was being followed after she had visited the bank. As she pulled up onto the drive at her home the offenders opened her car door and snatched her bag from her lap.
They were driving a dark coloured Vauxhall Astra vehicle which had cloned registration plates. It travelled back to the West Mercia region following the theft.
Northamptonshire Police said: “This was clearly a very distressing experience for the lady and was a targeted attack by the suspects.
“This is a plea for people to be mindful when withdrawing substantial amounts of money from their bank, if you see anyone suspicious in the branch, inform staff immediately. If you feel you are being followed in your vehicle, drive to somewhere such as a petrol station or public building and raise the alarm.
“Or if it is safe to do so, phone 999 from within your vehicle using a hands free device. It is always advisable to drive with your vehicle doors locked and if in doubt, use your car horn to raise the alarm to passers-by.”
The elderly lady is recovering from her traumatic ordeal.

How frightening this must have been for the Lady. As a retired security officer I leant not to put jandbags on front passenger seat. To put strap over gear stick or hand brake or on the floor out of sight. Put purse in side door pocket or glove box. Get a personal alarm their small but very loud which can fit on key ring. These will slow down any attempt by thieves they want a quick snatch. Don’t unlock doors untill checking who’s around you. Strange car at end of drive or a person you don’t know. Don’t open doors or lower windows to any stranger who approaches you for any reason! I do hope the Lady recovers from this horrid theft.
