Sport and leisure activities will now not take place

A number of local events and sports fixtures have been cancelled in response to the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Brackley Charter Fair was due to run until the weekend but the Wilson family (who organise the event) decided it shouldn’t continue.   The Fair had closed early during its opening night on Thursday when the news first came through.

In a statement issued on Friday morning Tommy Wilson said: “Following yesterday’s sad announcement of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth we, the Wilson family, have decided to cancel this year’s Brackley fair.

“This is to show a mark of respect to the Queen, her family, and the people of Brackley whom wish to mourn at this very sad time.”

The statement concluded: “God bless the Queen: Long live the King”.

In Banbury the Emergency Services Day in Spiceball Park planned for Saturday was cancelled.   Thames Valley Police would have been part of the event.   In announcing it would not take place a spokesperson said: “Our thoughts are with the Royal Family at this time.”

Elsewhere, it was also announced that Broughton Church Fete at Broughton Caste and the open weekend at Brackley Town Hall would also not be taking place.

In sport all football fixtures for the weekend were called off following a decision by the EFL on Friday morning.   Banbury United had been due to play Kettering Town, Brackley Town would have met Peterborough Sports, Easington Sports were set to play Gedling Miners Welfare and Oxford United would have visited Shrewsbury Town.

In Rugby Banbury Rugby Club pulled the plug on their Annual General Meeting which had been scheduled for Friday evening, alongside a taster night for the Belles and walking rugby training.   The rest of the weekend’s fixtures will go ahead, and will include a minutes silence for Her Majesty The Queen.

Looking ahead to next weekend, Brackley Town Council have already taken the decision to cancel Saturday 17th’s planned Party On The Pitch at Magdalen College’s St John’s Site.
