Aged 40-74? Take advantage of a free NHS Health Check
29/09/2022
The check includes blood pressure, BMI and cholesterol
Since April 2018, 51,965 people in Oxfordshire have taken up an invitation to have a free NHS health check. The service is funded by the County Council and available to anyone aged 40 to 74.
People are being urged to take advantage of the check, which can lead to lowering a person’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, kidney disease and certain types of dementia.
The health check takes around 20 minutes and includes a number of tests including taking your blood pressure and a sample of your blood to monitor your cholesterol. Your body mass index is also calculated to see if you are a healthy weight for your height.
Councillor Mark Lygo, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health and Equalities, said: “Health checks help people to get an overview of their general health and a fast, effective method of finding out if there are some simple things they could be doing to improve their long-term health and wellbeing.
“Sometimes even if you generally feel healthy, some conditions can lurk undiagnosed with next to no obvious symptoms. Getting a health check is a great way to help detect these and tackle them before they become serious. For example, data has shown us that there are high levels of abnormal cholesterol levels among attendees.”
People in the target age range will be invited for their check once every five years (apart from those already seeing their GP for certain conditions). Anyone who has received an invite in the past, but didn’t respond, can contact their GP surgery to make an appointment.
