The traditional 3 day event offers all the fun of the fair until Friday evening

Banbury Fair is back for 2022 and up and running with rides for thrill seekers of all ages and all the usual tastes and treats of the popular three-day annual event.

The fair was opened at 4pm yesterday afternoon (Wednesday) by Banbury town mayor Jayne Strangwood and Cherwell District Council chairman Les Sibley.   On the steps of the Waltzer in front of the town hall they were handed a golden key by William Wilson, boss of Bob Wilson Funfairs who run the event.   Councillors Strangwood and Sibley then toured the fairground and every amusement they touched with the key gave free rides.

Councillor Strangwood recalled her early years of attending the fair: “As a little child I remember coming on most of the rides.   I used to ask my mum and dad to please, please take me and they would say ‘oh go on then’!”

She planned to take her son on the Waltzers as that was one of his favourites, but only after she had changed out of her mayoral robes, for fear of losing the hat!   She described having the power of the golden key as “a bit of an honour”.

Councillor Sibley said: “It’s fantastic to see all the youngsters. Hopefully they’re going to really enjoy themselves and take advantage of the key that will that give him a free ride.    The youngsters and the adults all enjoying the old tradition of the fun fair is terrific.

“During the course of the pandemic people have been missing from the High Street, so this is a great opportunity to reengage with the local community after the last two years we’ve had.”

The fair runs for three days, until late Friday evening.
