Explosive experts called to deal with object from canal

A 50m cordon was put in place around the area as a precaution
A section of Bridge Street and the area beneath it along the Oxford canal in Banbury were both cordoned off by police on Friday afternoon after an unidentified object was pulled from the water. Officers from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit were called to deal with the situation.
The object was discovered by a person fishing for metallic items using a magnet at around 2pm.
Whilst the object was assessed a 50m cordon was put in place as a precaution. Bridge Street was closed from the junction next to Kwik Fit as far as the train station.
Surrounding routes in the town centre struggled to cope as Friday evening rush hour traffic was joined by motorists looking for alternative routes into Grimsbury.
It was confirmed that the Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit had taken away the object with the cordon removed by 7pm.
In May this year Banbury man Shane Phillips fished a grenade out of the canal using a magnet, not far from where Friday’s incident occurred. On that occasion army disposal experts undertook a controlled explosion.
