Season to be abandoned for Brackley Town?
02/02/2021
National League clubs being balloted on whether to make current season null and void
The future of the football season for Brackley Town and other teams in their league looks set to be decided through a vote by league members. National League clubs have been asked to participate in the ballot on whether to scrap the current season.
The vote comes as teams in The Saints’ league head towards the end of a two-week suspension of all games. That was initiated amid fears of coronavirus and the financial collapse of clubs.
Prior to the league suspension Brackley Town had faced a short period with no matches after a club member tested positive for COVID-19.
The National League season was cut short in April last year during the first lockdown period. When teams returned to competition the Government provided £10m in grants to compensate them for the absence of fans.
The Football Association, league and clubs believed the grants would continue throughout the lockdown period, however, it subsequently emerged that the money on offer from January is predominantly in the form of loans. Some grants may be offered but only in exceptional circumstances.
Financial insecurity, together with the wider issues around the pandemic, have led to calls from a number of clubs to curtail the current season.
The National League resolutions seeks to gain the approval of clubs to abandon the current season and cancel the usual promotion and relegation processes. Member clubs have 28 days to respond.
