Five early morning accidents on the M40 and flood warnings for rivers in the county
Wet conditions early on Friday morning caused problems for motorists and added to the potential of flooding in low lying areas in the days to come.
Following a very wet few hours, by 9.30am Thames Valley Police’s Roads Policing Team had dealt with five separate collisions on the M40. In all cases motorists had spun their cars.
The force issued a message asking people to take extra care as the heavy rain was causing lots of surface water hazards. Their advice was to turn your lights on, to slow down and not to tailgate the vehicle you are following.
The issues on the roads came a couple of days after we were reminded to keep an eye on the warnings issued by the Environment Agency for potential flooding in our area. That followed the amount of rainfall we’ve had in recent days, leading to rising river levels on watercourses in Oxfordshire.
On Friday evening seven flood alerts were in force in Oxfordshire with the River Cherwell from Lower Heyford down to Oxford noted as being one problem area. No flood warnings are currently in place for the river through the Banbury FM area, but low-lying land by Kings Sutton and between Aynho and Clifton is currently under water.
