Local support for Ukraine reaffirmed a year since the invasion began

Councillor Barry Wood: “we salute the bravery and resilience of the Ukrainian people”

Today marks exactly one year since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began and councils in Oxfordshire are coming together to reaffirm their joint commitment to continue to provide vital help and support to those affected.

The country will fall silent at 11am to pay tribute to the bravery of Ukrainians and highlight our solidarity with them.   The Ukrainian flag will be flown above Bodicote House, County Hall and other council buildings.

Last March the county and district councils formed a working partnership with health and voluntary and community sector partners to enable a joined-up response to the government’s Homes for Ukraine scheme.

Local people showed their support and generosity by hosting Ukrainian guests and through a variety of community activities.

Over the last year the partnership has evolved, working to support all refugees and those who seek asylum in this county, whilst continuing to support Ukrainian guests and their hosts as the war in Ukraine continues.

Councillor Barry Wood, Leader of Cherwell District Council, said: “As we mark a year of Russia’s illegal and inhumane invasion of Ukraine, we salute the bravery and resilience of the Ukrainian people. Our thoughts are with all Ukrainians whose lives have been affected by violence and displacement.

“We stand by our commitment to provide ongoing support to Ukrainians who have come to the UK to seek shelter and I thank our local communities and partners for their invaluable assistance in delivering the support and warm welcome that they need.”

Councillor Liz Leffman, Leader of Oxfordshire County Council, said: “As we enter the second year of Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, we stand together with the Ukrainian people in condemning this terrible war.

“Many Ukrainian people have come to our county to find a safe place to live and are welcome members of our local communities. We will continue to support them in every way that we can, and we thank local residents for their generosity in offering shelter and support.”

There is still a need for more hosts to support families from Ukraine.   A monthly payment of £550 will be made to hosts until the end of March 2024.   More details are available here
