Banbury’s positive start for health and fitness in 2023

We’re being encouraged to keep up the activity levels through the spring
Keeping fit and active was a high priority for lots of us as 2023 started. Local people flocked through the doors of Spiceball Leisure Centre, giving the sports facility its fourth busiest month on record in January. Swimming classes also saw record attendances.
Visitor levels at Spiceball, which is owned by Cherwell District Council, have officially returned to pre-pandemic levels. Now, with spring just round the corner, the Council has announced a package of health and wellbeing initiatives to help people keep their positive New Year intentions alive.
We are being invited to explore our local area with the help of the Council’s wayfinding and mapping projects.
Councillor Phil Chapman, Portfolio Holder for Healthy Communities, said: “Springtime is often thought of as when we wave goodbye to wishful plans for the new year but we’re encouraging people to spring into action as the days start to get longer.
“There are so many fantastic leisure offers in our area, designed to transform our new year’s resolutions into long-term healthy habits.
“It’s the perfect time to explore some of the fun trails and beautiful country walks we have created around the district, from the Bicester heritage walk to the Kidlington explorer routes or our Go Jauntly app.”
Tailored activity plans for people living with long term health conditions are available through the Move Together programme, which now has 820 registered participants. Around three-quarters of them say their activity levels have increased thanks to the programme,
The You Move offer helps parents and children enjoy sports and games together.
Councillor Phil Chapman added: “We are also continuing to invest in our leisure provision, with improvements on their way at Woodgreen swimming pool and work happening on additional funding for activities at local schools.”
