Victoria Prentis met Volodymyr Zelenskyy and learned of the horrors people had faced in Bucha
Banbury’s MP has visited Ukraine where the horrors faced by people really hit home during a trip to Bucha. Victoria Prentis was in in the war-torn country for the United for Justice Conference, where she met President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Ukrainian authorities organised the conference over last weekend in the western city of Lviv. It brought together stakeholders involved in the efforts to ensure accountability for international crimes allegedly committed in Ukraine. Mrs Prentis holds the role of Attorney General in Rishi Sunak’s government.
After meeting President Zelenskyy Mrs Prentis said: “[We] discussed how we can make sure we collect the evidence and bolster the legal frameworks we need for justice for Ukraine.”
Ahead of the conference, on Thursday Mrs Prentis visited Bucha, to the north-west of Kyiv. The city was invaded by Russian forces on their way to the capital in the early weeks of the invasion. After the Russian occupation, Ukrainian authorities said they found mass graves and bodies strewn in the town’s streets, buildings and homes. The events are being investigated as war crimes.
Mrs Prentis said it was Bucha where the reality of the horrors people had faced hit home. She said: “While battles still rage, Andriy Kostin [the Prosecutor General of Ukraine] is both prosecuting those who have committed atrocities in Ukraine and deterring any further crimes.
“The UK stands with Ukraine in our shared fight for justice.”
