Brackley campaigner teams up with Pot Noodle to highlight potholes damage

by Nathan Briant, Local Democracy Reporter

A Northamptonshire campaigner has teamed up with a well-known instant noodle brand to draw attention to the state of roads around the country.

Mark Morrell, known as Mr Pothole, lives in Brackley and has teamed up with Pot Noodle.

The UK’s coldest winter for 12 years has wreaked havoc on already damaged roads.

As reported last week, £200m extra spending allocated by the chancellor Jeremy Hunt will not pay for all required works in West Northamptonshire, let alone across England. They could cost up to £14bn.

Mr Morrell is encouraging people to share pictures of the worst potholes on social media using the hashtag #NothingFillsAHoleLikePotNoodle so more potholes can be identified and shared with councils.

Some of the potholes will also be filled in – temporarily – with Pot Noodles the highlight the problems they can pose.

“Potholes drive road users potty, me more than most. The pothole crisis across the UK is an increasingly serious issue and something that I have been campaigning for for over 10 years,” Mr Morrell said.

“During this period I have had to use my noodle with stunts to highlight just how bad potholes are – from floating plastic ducks in water filled potholes, birthday cakes, fishing rods and model submarines.

“When I heard about Pot Noodle’s campaign, I was up for it. What better way to fill a pothole than with Pot Noodles to highlight in a light-hearted way this serious issue. Mr Pothole can he fill it? With Pot Noodles yes, he can!”

Shannon Lennon-Smith, Pot Noodle’s marketing manager, said: “Brits know nothing fills a hole quite like a Pot Noodle.

“So when the pothole crisis caught our attention we wanted to raise awareness by pointing out the ridiculousness of the scale of the problem and support Mr Pothole on his crusade to improve Britain’s roads.”
