Public meetings organised as residents fear the end of Hanwell as a rural village
17/04/2023
An outline planning application has been submitted for the only remaining fields separating the village from Banbury
“This would be the end for Hanwell as a rural village” – that’s the warning from the Chairman of the action group which is hoping to stop building in the remaining field between the village and Banbury.
The Keep Hanwell Village Rural Action Group was set up in the face of the edge of Banbury’s built-up boundary expanding towards the village, with fears Hanwell would be swallowed up by the town.
Last week the group’s worst fears took a step towards reality when the Vistry Group submitted an outline planning application for 170 new homes on the land.
Keep Hanwell Village Rural Action Group is now doing what it can to ensure local residents fully understand Vistry’s proposal. They will be holding three public engagement events – two of which are this week.
The public meetings will also feature discussions on a proposed large industrial solar development to the north of Hanwell, between Shotteswell and Horley. The landowner is the same in both cases.
Chris Brant is Chair of the resident’s Action Group. He said: “This planning application from Vistry to build 170 homes in the parishes of Hanwell and Drayton would be the end for Hanwell as a rural village. Vistry’s proposal clearly shows how the village would join Banbury, losing further prime agricultural land in the process.
“As a residents action group, we plan to meet with our local Parish Council to discuss the application and we welcome support from neighbouring communities including residents living in Banbury’s Hanwell Chase who also want to protect their countryside between town and village”.
The Keep Hanwell Village Rural resident meetings are set to be held on these days:
- Tuesday 18 April, 7:30pm – 9pm, Hanwell Village Hall
- Wednesday 19 April, 7:45pm – 9:15pm, Old School, Horley
- Thursday 27 April, 7:30pm – 9pm, Shotteswell Village Hall
