Young and old come together for village’s Day of Dance
23/04/2023
The tradition of Morris Dancing lives on in Adderbury
Villagers in Adderbury came out to enjoy a friendly, relaxed and fun atmosphere for the annual Day of Dance on Saturday. The village’s two men’s Morris sides and a ladies’ side performed dances at a number of locations around Adderbury, including Adderbury’s current public houses and the homes of former village watering holes.
The family now living in the former White Hart in Tanners Lane offered refreshments to the dancers and those watching outside their home, in recognition of the part their house had played in the village life.
During the afternoon the sides danced together and even encouraged some audience participation.
The revival of morris dancing in Adderbury came about in 1975, thanks to villager Janet Blunt who wrote down details of traditional dances early in the twentieth century. A blue plaque commemorating Janet Blunt can be found outside Le Hall Place in Manor Road.
Another villager, Winnie Wyatt (who had worked for Janet Blunt) saved the manuscripts from being destroyed after Janet’s Blunt’s death.
Flowers were laid and prayers said at both Janet Blunt and Winnie Wyatt’s graves.
