Morrisons staff peddling to the palace during in store fund raiser
28/04/2023
The team are covering 220 miles on static bikes as they raise money for Helen and Douglas House Hospice
Staff at Morrisons in Banbury yesterday morning set off on a Coronation cycle ride covering the distance from Morrison’s head office in Bradford to Buckingham Palace. Whilst they are frantically pedalling to cover the 220 miles, they won’t actually move an inch as the whole trip will be completed in store on static bikes, supplied by Pure Gym.
The endeavour is a fund-raising initiative for the Helen and Douglas House Hospice. Every Morrisons store in the UK is twinned with their local Together for Short Lives hospice, which for Morrisons in Banbury is Helen and Douglas House.
The cycle challenge will run across four days and is accompanied by a number of attractions which customers can enjoy including a tombola, a water or wine lucky dip and an opportunity to guess the value of the items in a trolley to win the entire contents.
For people who love a challenge the store is hoping to find the person that can eat the most cream eggs in two minutes.
On Saturday the store manager will be in the stocks offering staff and customers a chance to Soak the Boss.
Mandy Merry is Morrison’s Community Champion. She said: “We’re borrowing the bikes from Pure Gym. We’ve got members of staff riding them and hopefully some members from Pure Gym will come down as well.
“We’re getting customers as well if they want to help out! It works out that we’ve got to do about 55 miles a day to complete the circuit.
“We’re looking to raise at least £1000 in those four days, but hopefully as much as we possibly can.”
As part of the Coronation theme plenty of red, white and blue will be on show and more daring staff members may even dress up as Kings and Queens!
The cycle challenge and activities run between 10am and 4pm Thursday to Saturday and 10am until 3pm on Sunday.
