Celebration of the life of a beech tree
28/04/2023
The tree had stood for over 150 years before public safety concerns led to it being felled
The life of a tree which had to be felled will be celebrated during an event in Banbury on May Day Monday afternoon.
For over 150 years the beech tree had stood in the garden of the Banbury Quaker’s Meeting House. It had to be brought down due to concerns over public safety.
Banbury Quakers are opening up their Meeting House and invite people to join them for a variety of music and songs, poetry and other readings. Films about the exciting life of trees will be shown and the afternoon will include activities suitable for all ages, including a meditation session. Children are welcome to attend.
Clerk of Banbury Quaker Meeting, Maria Huff, said: “Out of the great sadness we experienced in losing this majestic tree … we want to salvage something positive, and invite people into the Meeting House and its gardens to share an afternoon of uplifting and enjoyable activities.
“At the event, which is open to all, we will be celebrating the life of the beloved tree, the millions of rich lives it supported, the life it represents and much of the history that has happened around it.”
People can drop in any time from 12.30pm until 5pm. Refreshments will be available throughout. Anyone wishing to join in a shared lunch at the start of the event is asked to take along a vegan dish to contribute to the meal, if they can.
