Thousands of people attended Banbury’s Coronation celebration in Spiceball Park

“God save the King” and “Long live the King” were the replies by thousands of people in Banbury’s Spiceball Park on Sunday, in response to proclamations by the Deputy Lieutenant for Oxfordshire, Sir Tony Baldry, who took to the stage at the conclusion of Party In The Park.

The all day free-to-enter Coronation celebration treated partygoers to a massive selection of food and drink, great all-day music, plus fabulous entertainment that included crazy golf, a climbing wall, caving, circus workshops, go-karts, funfair rides, and much more.

As dusk fell Sir Tony was joined on stage by other dignitaries including Town Mayor Jayne Strangwood and MP Victoria Prentis.    They instigated a countdown after which beacons were lit either side of the stage.   A dazzling fire show and fireworks display brought the day to a close.

Earlier, people enjoyed a ‘big lunch’ together, using tables and benches that had been set up.   King Charles and Queen Camilla sent good wishes to those taking part – Banbury’s was one of more than 50,000 organised lunches across the country.

Other partygoers took their own picnics and camping chairs and soaked up the atmosphere of the celebrations.

Seven local bands performed live on stage, with the Skalectrics topping the bill and getting people dancing to a selection of songs from the likes of the Specials and Madness.

Its estimated that over 10,000 people attended the event.
