Dare devil kart racers to brave Avon Dassett descent
24/06/2023
The youngest competitor to race a homemade kart is aged just six
Dare devil kart drivers will be racing down the hill in Avon Dassett today (Saturday) for the return of the annual Soapbox Derby. Over 2,000 people are expected to watch the popular event.
The homemade karts can reach speeds of up to 50 miles per hour on the descent down the hill through the village.
22 adults and 5 juniors have signed up to take part with the youngest competitor, Tyler, aged just six.
Kart owners are proud of their creations with a Thunderbirds car, a Cruella de Vil mobile and a DeLorean inspired Soapbox all racing.
Practise runs get underway at 10am and the races start at midday. The senior race is run as a knockout with two karts at a time braving the steep and winding hill. The winner of each heat goes through to the next round until one kart is victorious.
The Soapbox Derby is a unique and popular event in the Avon Dassett summer calendar. Free parking is available and a street market will be operating. The Yew Tree pub will be open all day with a band performing in the evening.
The event raises money for The Children’s Christmas Wish List.
