Lorry fire closed M40 on Tuesday morning
27/06/2023
Smoke and exploding tyres were seen and heard in the nearby area
A lorry fire forced the closure of the southbound M40 on Tuesday morning. Emergency services were called to the blaze between junctions 10 and 9 (for Bicester) at 5.44am.
When they arrived at the scene the lorry and its load of vehicle carpets was already well alight. Smoke could be seen and loud noises from tyres exploding could be heard in the area.
The southbound carriageway was closed completely whilst the fire was tackled, with fire crews from Bicester, Banbury, Kidlington and Rewley Road in Oxford at the scene, supported by a specialist water carrier from Wheatley.
Long delays built on the approaches to the incident with the back of the queue at one point just a couple of miles south of Banbury at junction 11.
One lane reopened at 7.21am with two lanes remaining closed whilst recovery work was underway.
Delays on the southbound M40 past the scene have remained all morning.
Banbury FM reported details of the problems on the M40 throughout Banbury FM breakfast between 6 and 9am.
