Sports students from Banbury and Bicester College have raised over £3,000 for the British Heart Foundation in memory of stalwart Banbury United supporter Andrew Steele.   Mr Steele passed away in March 2022 at the age of 36.

Mr Steel’s son, Matthew, is a Banbury and Bicester College student and Banbury United Academy player.

The students organised a charity football match back in April.   The game was held at Banbury United’s Station Approach ground.   As well as raising money, the afternoon aimed to provide an awareness of cardiac arrest in young people, as well as celebrating the life of Andrew Steele.

Money was raised during the afternoon through a voluntary entry fee to watch the game, in a raffle and at a donation point.   Students also held a charity collection day in Banbury.

Speaking at the time of the game Kieron Duggan, Sports Teacher at Banbury and Bicester College, said: “This game is a way of celebrating the life of a man who sadly passed away at a very early age with something him and his son loved the most, football. It’s also a chance for my students to see that learning isn’t just in the classroom. It’s developing outside, becoming ready for the outside world.”
