Councillors find common ground and unanimity to move business forward
18/07/2023
Despite fears business would grind to a halt with no one group in control, the opposite actually happened
Harmony and agreement broke out between Councillors at Cherwell District Council’s full meeting last night – the first time Councillors had met since the debacle in May over which political group would lead the authority.
Six motions were put forward by Councillors from across the chamber, all of which were unanimously passed without any amendment.
Some had feared business would grind to a halt in the face of no one political group being able to control the agenda. In the end a conciliatory approach was evident, although a number of political jibes were made during debates.
Councillors agreed to create a cost-of-living action plan, to enhance the Council’s Tenant’s Charter and to do more to promote keeping the district tidy, in the face to littering and fly-tipping.
Labour group leader Councillor Sean Woodcock put forward the motion calling for the council to come up with a cost-of-living action plan within 100 days.
After his motion received support from across the Chamber he said: “Labour is committed to ensuring that our residents are supported during these tough times. We won’t just sit on our hands while people suffer or have to make awful choices between food and fuel.
“I am grateful to the other parties for supporting this motion that aims to tackle the most pressing issue facing our residents today.”
