Before June these would have been sent to landfill waste
Coffee loving locals have turned Cherwell District Council’s new coffee pod recycling scheme into an instant success.
It’s just a couple of months since a new kerbside coffee pod collection service was launched. Since then over a quarter of a million coffee pods have been recycled – weighing around 2.6 tonnes.
The pods are taken to specialist reprocessing plants where they are shredded to remove the coffee grounds. The plastic and aluminium are then transformed into new products, including drinks cans, car components, building products or plastic garden furniture.
The coffee grounds are processed by anaerobic digestion, which creates renewable energy and soil conditioner.
Tea and hot chocolate pods are also accepted.
Before the introduction of the scheme used pods ended up in general landfill waste.
