Scarecrow festival in Brackley this weekend
25/06/2021
70 scarecrows and a number of other events form part of a fun weekend
Brackley’s first ever scarecrow festival takes place this weekend and has an impressive 70 scarecrows on show. Created under the theme of The Great Outdoors, visitors will be able to see the creations between 9.30am and 6pm each day.
The event is the brainchild of Kath Bundy, Trish Savill and a small group that call themselves the Brackley Elves.
Having seen that Syresham Scarecrow Festival was going ahead in July the group realised this was something they could organise within COVID restrictions.
Visitors will be able to collect maps to find all the scarecrows and can follow a trail across Brackley Town Centre.
Deputy Mayor, Richard Butler, will be judging the scarecrows and awarding prizes.
Alongside the scarecrows extra activities are running on both days.
Between 10am and 4pm on Saturday an open-air shopping event will be held at Bracken Leas Primary School with the Brackley Morris Men and Brackley Wind Ensemble both appearing. Refreshments will be available at St Peter’s Church and the Methodist Church.
Brackley Athletic football club’s Chairman’s Charity Shield football tournament will be taking place on Sunday and a number of charity stalls will be set up outside between 10am and 2pm.
Several local businesses are running competitions through the weekend.
Brackley Elves formed in October 2020. Trish Savill said: “It was Christmas windows it all started over. I pulled together a facebook group to list everything that was going to happen over Christmas.
“Then one of my friends suggested we sort out gifts for children who have got families who can’t afford things. So it escalated heavily from being just a group promoting various bits around town to actually being helping hands around town.”
Trish explained this year’s theme was an obvious choice after months of lockdown. She said: “The theme is the great outdoors. We’ve been inside a lot so let’s have the great outdoors as our theme!”.
Maps and trail sheets are available on Saturday from Bracken Leas Primary School, the Humming Bird Café, St Peters Church and the Leisure Centre. On Sunday they can be picked up from the Humming Bird Café, the Leisure Centre and Brett’s Brews.
Trish said Brackley residents had been very positive about the weekend: “The town love getting together and we’ve had a lot of support.
“I love our town. Kath and I have done various bits in other groups but its only now we’ve come to realise what our town does do and how it does rally around when there’s something going on.”
