E-scooters banned on Banbury’s buses
20/09/2023
Despite being seen in use locally, electric scooters cannot legally be used in public areas here
Stagecoach has become the latest public transport operator to ban e-scooters from their vehicles. From next Monday (September 25), electric scooters can’t be taken on board any Stagecoach service.
They point out this is the case even if the battery pack has been removed.
Stagecoach says the move is a safety step due to the batteries on e-scooters being a known fire risk.
In June Chiltern Railways joined many other rail operators in banning e-scooters in Banbury train station and on their train services.
Despite being seen in use locally, electric scooters cannot legally be used anywhere in the Banbury area, apart from on private land with the landowner’s permission.
The Roads Policing Unit at Thames Valley Police issued a reminder in January that e-scooters are classified as Personal Light Electric Vehicles so they are treated as motor vehicles, making them subject to the legal requirements such as having an MOT, license, tax and insurance.
They added that as e-scooters do not have number plates, signalling ability and don’t always have visible rear lights, they can’t be used legally on the roads.
