Overturned lorry closes Hempton to South Newington road
08/07/2021
Limestone and diesel spilled from the toppled lorry on the B4031
The road between Hempton and South Newington remained closed for a number of hours yesterday after a lorry overturned, spilling its load and fuel tank contents across the carriageway. The incident on the B4031 at Iron Down Hill happened near Worton Grounds Farm.
The 45 tonne HGV overturned on the road at lunchtime. It was carrying a load of limestone which spilled onto the verge. The lorry’s diesel tank was ruptured during the incident, spilling diesel onto the road.
The driver escaped with minor cuts.
Recovery of the lorry from a position its side, and the dealing with the volume of diesel spilt, led to the road remaining closed for several hours.
Fire crews used environmental protection equipment to contain and absorb the leaking diesel.
A team from BT were also called as a telegraph pole and phone cable were damaged.
The road was assessed for the need for resurfacing following the incident.
Fire and Rescue Service crews from Deddington, Banbury and Kidlington attended the scene, alongside Thames Valley Police, South Central Ambulance Service and the Highways team.
