Call for Climate Forum to allow local input to tackling global warming
13/10/2023
A climate emergency was declared by Cherwell District Council in 2019
Labour Councillors at Cherwell District Council will be seeking support for an initiative to help gather ideas to address global warming locally when the Council meets next week.
A motion proposed by Councillor Mark Cherry asks the Council to run a Climate Forum, which would be open to local people and representatives from climate-action groups. The aim would be to map out the future agenda of Cherwell’s climate response.
Cherwell District Council has already declared a climate emergency, following a motion by Councillor Cherry in July 2019. That led the authority to set itself a target of getting its own operations and activities to net zero carbon emissions by 2030. The Council also aims to do its part to achieve a net zero carbon district by 2030, leading through example.
Councillor Cherry said: “Climate change is getting worse with parts of the Earth uninhabitable for our children in the future. We will see continued warming temperatures year after year.”
The motion will be debated by Councillors on Monday evening.
Councillor Cherry added: “The motion will facilitate the people of Cherwell who are passionate about climate change taking part in a newly formed forum, to add their views to Cherwell District Council on climate change and policy going forward.”
