Town Hall purple for World Polio Day
24/10/2023
Banbury Rotary Club is part of an international campaign to eradicate polio
Today is World Polio Day – a day when Rotary Clubs and healthcare professionals highlight their fight to end polio.
Banbury Rotary Club is part of the international ‘Purple for Polio’ campaign – a polio eradication initiative that has been running since 1979. Today polio has been wiped out in all but two countries worldwide.
To mark World Polio Day Banbury Town Hall was illuminated in purple last night and will be again tonight.
Rotary club chairman John Groves said: “Purple is the colour of the dye that was used in developing countries to mark the fingers of those who had been vaccinated. It has been adopted as the colour of the ongoing initiative to wipe out polio around the world – and to make sure the disease doesn’t return.”
The rotary club will be planting 16,000 purple crocuses in People’s Park next month as a further show of support for the campaign.
