Aldi’s plans for Banbury stores
06/08/2021
Modernisation and a new store are being planned by the retailer
Aldi has told Banbury FM it is hoping to secure a site for a second supermarket in town. The retailer has also confirmed that they are planning a modernisation of their existing Ruscote Avenue site and are hoping work will be complete so the store can reopen before Christmas.
Currently the planning application for the Ruscote Avenue Store is being considered by Cherwell District Council. Aldi says they are “actively searching for a suitable site for a second store in Banbury, and is considering a number of alternative sites.”
Subject to the plans for the Ruscote Avenue site being accepted the modernisation would bring the external look of the existing building into line with recently built stores elsewhere. The existing free-standing glazed canopy would be removed and replaced by new cantilevered canopy. Cycle parking would be positioned here.
Four new active Electric Vehicle Charging Point bays would be installed next to the mother and child and click and collect spaces along the Ruscote Avenue side of the car park. Provision would be included for this to be extended to a further 20 spaces in the future.
Full car park re-surfacing and marking is also planned.
In the application document Aldi says: “The proposed changes will bring the store more in line with Aldi’s current store design and format, through the addition of features associated with their contemporary stores, such as a cantilevered canopy, metal cladding, and increased levels of shop front glazing.
“A new parapet element will also increase the prominence of the store at the car park entrance, which is limited at present due to the elongated shape of the site.”
Subject to planning permission Aldi is planning on completing the modernisation work this year so the store can reopen for Christmas.
The Ruscote Avenue Aldi store is 1,743 square metres in size with 110 car parking spaces.
No further details are currently available with regards the potential site for a second Aldi store in Banbury.
A spokesperson for the retailer said: “Aldi is actively searching for a suitable site for a second store in Banbury, and is considering a number of alternative sites.
“At the same time, there is a planning application currently under consideration by Cherwell District Council for the modernisation of the Ruscote Avenue store. Subject to that application being approved in the near future, Aldi will carry out the work in 2021, and the new and improved store will be open by Christmas.
“Aldi is looking forward to improving the shopping experience for its valued customers at its Ruscote Avenue store, and hopes to be able to provide easier access to its award-winning range with the addition of a second store in the future.”
Separately and unrelated, an outline planning application has been lodged with Cherwell District Council for a food store to be built at Cotefield Business Park on hardstanding land off the Oxford Road, opposite Banbury Rugby Club. The plans for a 1,235 square metre store have been submitted by Cotefield Holdings Limited.
