Quick thinking farmers avert larger field fire
14/08/2021
Two crews were called to a field near Croughton after a fire due to a mechanical issue
Quick thinking farmers and firefighters managed to contain a field fire last night and prevented a much larger incident occurring. Fire fighters were called to a farm field near Croughton at just after 9pm.
Farmers who were harvesting spotted a fire due to a mechanical issue as they baled. Whilst waiting for the fire service to arrive the farmers cut firebreaks and then moved to safety.
Two crews from Bicester were sent to deal with the incident. They were on scene for just under an hour extinguishing the bales and hot spots.
Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue say that the quick thinking of the farmers meant the fire was contained to just patches and a couple of bales.
Writing on social media they said: “In this hot weather fires can start for all manner of reasons so we urge people to be vigilant and take extra care as the hot weather returns.”
