Trophies awarded and donations to 12 charities made at Broughton Castle Sportive Presentation Evening
Broughton Castle’s Great Hall was the setting for the Broughton Castle Sportive Presentation Evening last night. The popular cycling event, organised by the Rotary Club of Banbury Cherwell, was held back in July.
655 riders took part and over 100 volunteers helped make sure the event ran smoothly. Guests at last night’s event included Banbury’s Deputy Town Mayor Cllr Jayne Strangwood, Martin Fiennes, the Rotary Club’s District 1090 Governor Marius Hopley, cyclists and representatives from local charities.
Riders from the fastest teams were on hand to be presented with trophies. The Broughton Castle Trophy went to Oxford University Cycling Club Alumni (above) who completed the 100 mile route in 5 hours and 52 minutes.

The Rotary Challenge Trophy for the 75 mile route was won by Apache Brave Racing and the Presidents Cup for the 50 mile course was awarded to the Wellsbourne Wheelers Hasting 50.

Richard Moyle leads a small group of volunteers who organise the event. He said: “Its not strictly a race, but the teams get psyched up and you see them cycling hard. They train for weeks and then, as you heard tonight, they perform at some very fast times. Its incredible.”
£9,600 was raised for local charities and this was distributed amongst 12 local organisations with representatives on hand to receive their donations. Recipients included Grimsbury Scouts, Cyclists Fighting Cancer, Dogs For Good, the Katharine House Hospice, the Sunshine Centre, the Let’s Play Project, the Friends of Agnes Court, Radio Horton, Banbury Inner Wheel, Banbury Lions, Banbury Rotary Club and Banbury Cricket Club.
Mr Moyle said: “The money gets spread quite widely. Its very important for those groups to help them keep going in their various ventures.”
The evening concluded with a surprise for Mr Moyle himself as he was presented with the Paul Harris Award marking his huge contribution to the Rotary Club’s work over the years.
