Villagers open their private gardens to raise money for Katharine House
A Katharine House Hospice fundraiser which had been struggling to gain support earlier this year turned into a huge summer success.
Nearly £6,000 was raised as green fingered supporters opened up their private gardens to the public over the spring and summer months.
Early in the year the Hospice had seen a slow uptake of interest in the annual Open Garden scheme and appealed for more people to get involved. Villagers from Bloxham, Culworth, Hornton, Middleton Cheney, Moreton Pinkney and South Newington answered the call and helped make this year a huge success.
Community Engagement Manager Roseann Thompson said: “We’ve been so touched by the enthusiasm of our supporters and want to say a massive thank you to those who opened up their gardens, and to the visitors who came to the events and donated to Katharine House.
“The gardens have given a vast amount of pleasure to thousands of people over the years and provide people with the chance to enjoy a wonderful afternoon out with family and friends.”
Over the warmer months visitors paid to explore beautiful private gardens and in many places were treated to delicious teas and homemade cakes. Extra cash was also generated through the sale of plants, flowers and honey.
The hospice is already sowing the seed for Open Gardens 2024, urging people to sign-up now and even encourage their neighbours to take part in a village-wide event.
