Queues have been forming on local petrol station forecourts
The call not to panic buy fuel is being ignored by some motorists in the Banbury FM area.
A number of petrol stations have seen queues forming on their forecourts.
A member of staff at one supermarket petrol station told Banbury FM the situation was “ridiculous” as they didn’t have any shortage of fuel. They said that last night the normally quiet period after 9pm was much busier and people were notably filling up their cars, rather than the smaller amounts they would normally buy.
Another Banbury town centre retailer confirmed they were also experiencing panic buying. They said it was bad news for their business as their supplies would be used up far sooner than normal.
This morning the Transport Secretary tried to dissuade drivers from panic buying petrol following the news that BP had been forced to close down a handful of its forecourts.
Grant Shapps told Sky News: “The advice would be to carry on as normal, and that is what BP is saying as well.”
Mr Shapps added: “As of last night, five petrol stations on the BP network out of 12 or 13 hundred were affected.
“I’m meeting this morning with Tesco and I’m sure they’ll give me the update for themselves.
“None of the other retailers said they had any closures.”
