Singing to celebrate the NHS in Banbury
11/12/2023
The NHS Power Choir will perform a 23 song set
The 75th anniversary of the NHS will be celebrated at a special concert in St Mary’s Church this Thursday. The evening will feature a choir formed from local NHS healthcare professionals, including staff at the Horton General Hospital.
The choir came together earlier this year during the NHS’ 75th anniversary celebrations and includes people from a variety of roles including porters, house keepers and midwives.
Those joining were told they could be taught to sing and so they simply needed to turn up with enthusiasm! Over the months that followed the choir – which has been named The NHS Power Choir – have learned a portfolio of songs and performed at the NHS Staff Awards in Oxford during the Summer.
Thursday’s free event will feature a 23 song set, including lots of traditional Christmas carols, some gospel tunes and well known pop songs.
Jason Rigby is the choir’s leader. He started work as a Facilities Manager at the Horton last year.
He said: “I’ve been involved in music for many years and realised that the Horton, in line with its values of well-being and joy, did not have a choir. We’re now up to about 40 members.
“These are people that have never performed to audiences this size before. There’s a little bit of nervousness. It will be my job on the night to keep them calm, remind them they can do it and just to smile and enjoy it.”
Anyone who would like to attend the concert can contact Jason for tickets by emailing jason.rigby@ouh.nhs.uk.
